We haven't heard a solitary peep out of IXI Mobile in a hot minute, even though its Ogo line -- once a member of Cingular's lineup -- had found some niche popularity among teens and the deaf community. We'd even thought they'd gone into R&D hibernation, actually, but apparently not -- they're innovating. They're innovating so much, in fact, that they've innovated themselves right out of the landscape clamshell form factor that made the Ogo famous. This Inventec-sourced CC-10 we just spotted in the FCC looks more Centro than Ogo, though all of the original's features -- notably strong IM and social networking support -- carry on through to the new model. At any rate, we can say that IXI doesn't intend to break back into the North American market -- at least not with this exact unit, anyway -- since GSM 1900 and Bluetooth are the only features it bothered testing.

Dailywireless is taking the day off. Happy Independence Day. And Canada Day, too. Summer is grand.

What if you had an auction and everybody showed up?  It used to be that way, but for the last year it has been quite the opposite.  Here in the US, Qwest’s possible longhaul sale was met with the sound of crickets chirping - at least at the price they wanted. Tiscali [...]

It’s another in my (very) irregular series of “why hasn’t anyone made this yet?” posts… The idea on this one is simple. Since all the television stations in the United States are now broadcasting in digital format, and since you can buy DTV converter boxes for as little as about $50, I’m assuming that decoding a [...]

FriendFeed accelerated the move towards truly real-time search engines, with the introduction of real-time, constantly updating search results. As companies including Twitter, Facebook, Google and even Microsoft jockey to capture the audience for real-time search, FriendFeed remains a small player, but a technological innovator. The woman accused of cyberbullying a 13-year-old into committing suicide had her [...]

Alcatel-Lucent announced a new software release for its Intelligent Services Access Manager platform that enables VDSL2 line-bonding for improved bandwidth. The development comes at a time when telcos such as AT&T and Qwest Communications increasingly have talked about the viability of line-bonding, though the technique has not yet been broadly deployed.

Meanwhile, in connection with this ISAM platform, the vendor also unveiled an ADSL modem with low-power mode that cuts power consumption and saves energy when the modem is not in use.

AT&T (NYSE:T) this week brought two new applications to the iPhone, AT&T U-verse TV Mobile Remote Access and AT&T Navigator. Unlike most items in Apple’s App Store, the monthly charge for the Navigator App will show up on AT&T’s bill, giving the carrier a more direct piece of the app-store action.

This morning Socialtext is announcing that they are releasing SocialCalc (integrated into their enterprise-level wiki) in a wider beta, basically available for test to all of their paying customers. This release includes many advances since their last, much more limited beta release. It includes: Multi-level multi-sheet rollup (the old one only went one level down and didn't recalc that sheet), a much more polished user interface, faster save and load, better integration of advanced wikitext functionality, and all of the other advances in the latest SocialCalc (such as Ctrl-C/V system clipboard support for quick exchange of data with Excel and other applications). Socialtext developers and I have been working a long time to get to this. (While this uses the same basic spreadsheet engine as the OLPC version, it has lots of special Socialtext-specific UI code and makes use of SocialCalc's intersheet reference capabilities as well as Socialtext's online storage, collaboration, and access control functionality.)

For me, this is really a major moment. I finally can do the demo I've been wanting to do for years: A complete budget example with a rollup of 50 states into a country total, with each of the 50 states' pages dependent upon other pages with country-wide values (such as price lists and model factors), and each with a link to a wiki discussion page.

[Diagram showing rollup]

You can change a master model factor (such as default growth or default product mix) or a particular state's values (such as sales growth override value) and then load the USA or regional page and see them all recalculated to provide the latest totals. We are showing that demo at the Enterprise 2.0 conference starting later this morning. I've made a 5-minute Camtasia screencast of the demo that you can look at here. Conversely, why do we assume the primary purpose of our mobile handsets is telephony? Why can’t the press-and-hold shortcuts be to text my nearest and dearest, rather than call them? There are some people I text far more than I call!
